Stage Lighting for University Auditoriums: Lessons from Senghor University in Egypt
Modern university campuses are increasingly designed for more than traditional teaching. Large auditoriums and multipurpose halls may host academic conferences, official ceremonies, presentations, cultural programs, and live events, making flexible auditorium stage lighting an important part of the venue design.
The new campus of Université Senghor in New Borg El-Arab, Alexandria, Egypt, provides a relevant example. On May 9, 2026, the campus was officially inaugurated in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Audio Technology delivered an integrated AV and Pro Systems solution for the project, with LIGHT SKY fixtures included in the professional lighting system.

What Does a University Auditorium Need from Stage Lighting?
Unlike a dedicated concert venue, a university auditorium often needs to accommodate very different types of events. A lighting system therefore needs to balance precise illumination, color flexibility, visual consistency, quiet operation, and practical fixture weight.
For conferences and formal events, the priority is clear and controlled illumination of speakers, presenters, podiums, and other key areas. Light should cover the stage accurately without creating distracting shadows or excessive contrast. High color rendering can also be valuable when events are recorded or streamed, helping people and objects appear more naturally on camera. Compact and lightweight fixtures can also make overhead installation and flexible positioning easier.

Performance and cultural events introduce additional requirements. The lighting may need to cover wider areas, including the audience area, create different color environments, and transition smoothly between scenes. This makes a combination of complementary lighting functions more practical than relying on a single fixture type.
Combining Controlled Illumination with Flexible Color
Profile and wash lighting can play different but complementary roles in a multi-purpose auditorium. Profile fixtures are suited to applications where accurate beam placement is required, while wash and PAR fixtures provide broader coverage and more flexible color. Moving-head beam lights can further complement the setup with dynamic effects and added visual impact when needed.
The three functions can therefore work together: controlled profile lighting establishes clear illumination for the main subjects, wash lighting adds color, atmosphere, and wider coverage, while moving-head beam lights provide additional dynamic effects when needed.
The Senghor University project provides a practical example of this approach. LIGHT SKY’s 8800-C42 LED profile light offers adjustable color temperature from 2800K to 10000K, with CRI and TLCI values of 91–97, while the compact F230 moving-head beam light can provide additional dynamic effects and flexible coverage when needed. Together, they support both controlled illumination and more dynamic stage applications.
For broader color coverage, the PL1915 RGBL PAR light uses RGBL color mixing and 16-bit dimming, providing flexible color control and smooth transitions. Used alongside more focused profile lighting, it can help a multi-purpose auditorium adapt its visual environment to different events.

For a modern university auditorium, flexibility is ultimately what makes a lighting system useful across different event formats. The Senghor University project demonstrates how precise illumination, flexible color control, and complementary lighting functions can support everything from formal conferences and ceremonies to performances and other stage activities.
